Every year, one of the standout events on our calendar is undoubtedly PostgreSQL Conference Europe — this year in the historic city of Athens. We were proud to be featured as a Platinum Sponsor, bringing a team of 21 Postgres experts to the event. It’s always a highlight when our team, hailing from various corners of the world, comes together at such an incredible gathering. We made sure to take advantage of our time in Athens, exploring the vibrant city together after hours. Athens is truly a remarkable place, offering much more than just ancient buildings and monuments.
It is always so that a few happen to arrive early, and this year I was among those. After a bright and early start on Sunday morning, the plane carried me from Düsseldorf to Athens, to arrive at a leisurely 10 AM local time. So, what does a workaholic do, when he comes to the world’s culture capital? He goes to work 😉
A PostgreSQL conference is all about networking, which starts when the first conference participants arrive. As CYBERTEC has been a long-time part of the vibrant community, seeing friends and meeting new people, as the technology keeps growing, are among the most enjoyable experiences. It was a pleasure to connect with team members at Cloudway and Temenos!
Training Day: October 22, 2024
Let’s dive right into my impressions of the conference. The conference kicked off on October 22 with a day dedicated exclusively to training sessions. Our CEO, Hans-Jürgen Schönig, led a session titled “A Beginner's Guide to Performance.” Hans was in his element, and the participants absorbed every bit of knowledge like sponges.
Teampower and a special guest at dinner
The CYBERTEC team dinner turned out to be a real treat. Not just because we had the opportunity to reconnect with colleagues from all over the world, but also because Mr. Bruce Momjian did us the honor of joining our gathering.
The Conference Begins: October 23, 2024
This year, PG Conf EU was hosted at the Divani Caravel Hotel, featuring four plenary rooms. The turnout was impressive, making the atmosphere lively and engaging, especially when reconnecting with old acquaintances. The selection of talks was outstanding, making it difficult to choose which sessions to attend. I’d like to highlight some presentations from my talented colleagues:
- High-concurrency Distributed Snapshots by Ants Aasma
- UNDELETE Data FROM Table by Christoph Berg
- Security Attacks on PostgreSQL by Laurenz Albe
- Comparing Connection Poolers for PostgreSQL by Julian Markwort
Additionally, I want to mention our “Coffee with CYBERTEC” initiative, where we held dedicated 1-1 conversations with attendees. Guests took this opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations with our experts, resulting in in-depth discussions, delightful chats, and the forging of new connections.
Highlights of October 24, 2024
The following day was filled with numerous engaging talks. Akshat Jaimini and I collaborated with Pavlo Golub on a presentation titled “GSoC 2024: Enhancing Data Insights for Postgres with Remote Sinks”. At 5 PM, Hans-Jürgen Schönig delivered a brief keynote on “Using PostgreSQL in Real Life”.
Departure Day: October 25, 2024
The final day of the conference arrived, and it was bittersweet to see it come to an end. I want to take a moment to highlight a wonderful colleague who delivered an impressive presentation despite being relatively new to speaking: Rafia Sabih. Her talk on “PostgreSQL Executor: Executing your execution plan” captivated the audience. Well done, Rafia!
In the afternoon, we were treated to a presentation by András Váczi, titled “HELP!!1! The Database is Slow!!”
That wraps up my reflections on PGConf.eu 2024 in Athens. I am grateful to have been part of such an enriching experience. A heartfelt thank you to all the organizers and my entire CYBERTEC team. It was a pleasure to represent our company alongside you all! The days were filled with energy and new insights, punctuated by engaging conversations and the development of exciting new connections. It was, as always, an incredible experience!
